Machine learning is a real-world superpower. It can be done by anyone who has a computer and will to do it, even a 16-year-old. Anyone can impact the world, and there are no longer huge barriers to do so.
When Mikhail Szugalew discovered that the visually impaired face huge navigational challenges with tasks as simple as crossing the street, he decided to do something about it. He started his company NavAssistAi, which is using artificial intelligence and machine learning to create object-detection algorithms that can solve this problem.
Mikhail outlines his journey and the lessons he learned throughout—not only from his failures but also from talking to professionals in the field, from having conversations with real people who experience the problem he’s addressing, and from his successes. By highlighting these aspects, he offers a look into the journey of building a TensorFlow-based solution to solve a problem and the future of machine learning as seen from a youthful perspective.

Mikhail Szugalew is a machine learning developer at the Knowledge Society. A year ago, he knew nothing about machine learning, object detection, or the physical challenges the visually impaired face. With a strong will, he set out to learn about AI and make an impact in the world. Over the course of just eight months, he researched and developed a prototype device to assist the visually impaired with their navigational challenges. His endeavors show how machine learning technologies can impact the future. His experiences at just the age of 16 are a great example of how we live in a world where new powerful technologies can be leveraged by anyone, and even teenagers can make a difference.
