Enterprises adopt cloud platforms such as AWS for agility, elasticity, and cost savings. Database design and management requires a different mindset in AWS when compared to traditional relational database management system (RDBMS) design.
Gowrishankar Balasubramanian and Rajeev Srinivasan highlight the best practices in choosing the right data storage, data migration strategies, and tools used for data processing and storage on an AWS cloud platform. They also explore real-life case studies from various industries to illustrate these concepts. You’ll go hands-on to evaluate the application use cases, decide on the target data store, and migrate a sample relational schema into AWS cloud using AWS DMS. You’ll leverage the AWS services such as Amazon DynamoDB, Amazon S3, and Amazon relational database service (RDS).
Prerequisite knowledge
- A working knowledge of AWS cloud (virtual private cloud [VPC], RDS, DynamoDB, CloudFormation, and S3) and relational databases
Materials or downloads needed in advance
- A laptop with admin privileges and an AWS account with necessary IAM privileges to launch resources

Hi again. Thanks for the info. I created a free 12 month account on AWS and ran some labs. Will the free account work for this tutorial? There are some limits on services available and also instances types, storage etc. I can spin up a EC2 instance, create an S3 bucket, use mechanical EBS within limits, use RDS for MySQL, PostgreSQL, MariaDB, Oracle BYOL, or SQL Server, use elastic cache within limits, etc…

@Brian – Thanks for your interest in our session. Although prior knowledge is preferred, we will provide a self-paced lab instructions that you just need to follow in your AWS Account. if possible, please try a few 10 minute tutorials using the below link https://aws.amazon.com/getting-started/tutorials/?awsf.getting-started-content=use-case-tmt%23databases. Reg CloudFormation, we will provide a template that you will click and launch resources. so basic understanding of CloudFormation is sufficient. No development knowledge required.
Wondering if this tutorial is a good fit. I have strong background relational technology and much data management experience, but limited AWS knowledge. Would like to take this tutorial but wondering if the hands-on component would be manageable. I am familiar with cloud concepts, know what S3, RDS and Dynamo DB are, but have not used them hands-on yet. Not familiar so much with Cloudformation.
