Who is this presentation for?

  • SREs, DevOps engineers, JavaScript developers, and anyone who operates highly available services

Using Lambda@Edge in CloudFront, Contentful created a solution to actively serve requests from multiple S3 backends (circumventing an AWS restriction) to ensure resiliency to regional outages. As the company progressed, it built tooling to adopt Lambda@Edge as a software platform into its stack, which, at the end, allowed it to build high-performant complex logic on it.

Julia Biro explains not only the technical solution but also Contentful’s journey, its decisions, and its decision-making processes. She also details her insights and experience with the special characteristics of Lambda@Edge as a software platform.

You’ll discover a ready-to-use solution to an increasingly important (yet surprisingly basic) technical problem that so far had no officially supported best practice. And you’ll learn a reusable process for how to manage the uncertainty of adopting a new platform and for making decisions about what to build.

Prerequisite knowledge

  • A basic understanding of what S3, CloudFront, and AWS regions and the role of CI/CD, logging, and monitoring

What you'll learn

  • Learn how to use Lambda@Edge to manipulate traffic and how use TypeScript with Lambda@Edge
  • Understand production readiness for new infrastructure elements and a systematic approach to reduce risk and uncertainty

Julia Biro is a reliability engineer at Contentful, working with highly available systems serving mass customer traffic. She’s especially interested in the concepts that allow high availability—everything from horizontal scalability to the process around incident response. She sees systems, people, and the tooling that allows interaction between them as one whole that should be managed as such.
