Data-driven decision making is a crucial asset in today’s technological ecosystem. In such a fast-paced environment, it is very challenging for a data and analytics team to scale up while maintaining its cohesion.
Typeform, a Barcelona-based startup for conversational data collection, grew from 60 to 150 employees in less than a year. As the company itself and its data culture developed, the data team felt the need to evolve into a more proactive way of working. In practical terms, this meant transitioning into a less centralized structure and embedding its data scientists inside cross-functional teams. As is well known, this process can cause issues such as isolation and misalignment, leading to an inefficient and demotivated team.
Viola Melis details initiatives the team developed to ensure alignment and cohesion, discusses the journey through this challenging process, and shares lessons learned, best practices, and new processes that were established.
