Who is this presentation for?

  • Data scientists and data journalists

Prerequisite knowledge

  • A working knowledge of the data science domain
  • Basic experience with the Jupyter Notebook (useful but not required)

What you'll learn

  • Understand how data journalism can be powered by the public
  • Learn how to construct a narrative within a Jupyter notebook and how to pick the right type of data story for the data

Data allows journalists to take on bigger stories, more authoritatively verify claims, find new stories, offer detail and illumination to delicate issues, and be more transparent. But these opportunities also bring challenges for data journalism.

Drawing inspiration from narrative theory and design thinking, Karlijn Willems walks you through effectively using Jupyter notebooks to guide the data journalism workflow and tackle some of the challenges that data can pose to data journalism. You’ll learn how the Jupyter Notebook can help you to implement some of the most recent trends and best practices in data journalism and explore some real-world examples.

Topics include:

  • Combining data, visuals, and narrative
  • Building a data story: The plot structure of your notebook and the typology of data stories
  • Interactive visualizations
  • Toward a public-powered data journalism model
