frog design recently partnered with European travel guide Merian to create a next-generation travel device, leveraging GPS technology to offer in-context tourist information and recommendations. By offering up information about a city as the user moves through it, the Merian Scout Navigator frees travelers from the restraints of a fixed to-do list. En route information alerts users to the sights around them, calling upon a wealth of images, media, and interactive maps—migrating Merian’s rich content from the printed page to the handheld device.
In addition to this more traditional tourist information, the Scout Navigator’s built-in GPS informs users when they happen to be two blocks from an interesting, little-known landmark or great café—the incidental moments and memories of which the best trips are built.
frog created both the hardware and software for this new device, creating a user experience that shifts the traveler’s focus from the guidebook to the world around him.
