A Year in the life of Google Crisis Response

Fundamental to its mission of making critical information around natural disasters and humanitarian crises more accessible, crisis mapping is major focus of the Google Crisis Response team. As part of this work, the Crisis Response team has developed several new tools and products, such as Google Public Alerts, meant to facilitate the dissemination of crisis and emergency-related geographic data on the web. This talk will offer an overview of these efforts, and provide the lessons we’ve learned from the past year of crisis mapping.

Pete Giencke

Google Inc.

Pete Giencke has over ten years of experience in information technology and geographic information systems (GIS). At Google, he has contributed to various geographic data integration and dissemination efforts, including Google’s Crisis Response team. Since 2008, Pete has worked as a GIS data engineer on the Google Earth team.

Prior to joining Google in 2008, Pete served as a project manager at the Great Lakes Commission in Ann Arbor, MI and as a junior programmer at the Minnesota Population Center in Minneapolis, MN. Pete holds a bachelor’s degree in geography and a master’s degree in geographic information systems from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities.
