Should you create an iPhone or Android app? What about a mobile-optimized site? Maybe you need native and HTML5 applications? Or, as the co-founders from Zaarly will explain in this presentation, the journey is more important than the final destination.

Originally conceived as an iPhone app during Start Up Weekend LA, the Zaarly concept was ideal for a South by Southwest debut; however, there wasn’t enough time to complete Apple’s app store review process. Instead, the programmers got to work and Zaarly was quickly transformed into a mobile site— just in time for SXSW. After facilitating more than $10,000 in transactions in 48 hours, Zaarly’s co-founders quickly realized the HTML5 site wasn’t robust enough. So, the company went native again —building iPhone and Android apps. But, what about the rest of the smartphone market? Building apps for every platform just wasn’t feasible for the young start-up. Instead, Zaarly decided to revisit the HTML5 concept and build a robust mobile site. Now? Zaarly leverages native apps and a mobile-optimized HTML5 site.

In this presentation, Zaarly’s co-founders will share lessons learned during their journey from an app to a minimally viable mobile site to a fully functioning iPhone and Android apps, with a robust mobile site. Zaarly’s CEO Bo Fishback and CTO Ian Hunter will discuss technical, business and marketing considerations and lessons learned along the way.
