Got Smarts?

ITS gives rise to the promise of driverless automobiles, commuter trains that effortlessly allow riders to transfer to buses, smart in-car navigation devices that reroute around trouble spots, parking garages that spur demand by using variable-rate pricing, fleet management tools designed to efficiently route hybrid lorries and the list goes on.

The promise is exciting and the opportunities are real, but few outside of the world of public infrastructure have any understanding about how this will impact the everyday lives of people.

In this talk, Ian White will share past stories of success (and failure), attempt to explain the byzantine (and bureaucratic) world of ITS financing, how hackers and startups can tap into a rich pool of existing data and collaborate with the public sector to help realize the dreams of smart travel.

Ian White

Urban Mapping, Inc

Ian White is CEO of Urban Mapping, a company that produces wayfinding tools and solutions across the tactile and interactive domains. The company’s products include the multiple award-winning Panamap print map and Urbanware geospatial database products, all focusing around urban place. White holds 15 years experience in marketing strategy and product development. He has been published in academic journals and the business press.

Prior to founding Urban Mapping in 2003, White worked as a business consultant at and held various roles in business development and marketing. He also served as Adjunct Professor of Design and Management at Parsons School of Design in New York.

White received a BA from McGill University in Montreal, an MBA from Babson College and completed postgraduate studies in France.
