The Challenges Faced by Traditional Industries Embracing a Web2.0 World

Outside the technology community, traditional industries have made slower progress in embracing the power of the Internet economy. On this panel, professional service leaders from the Legal, Scientific and Financial worlds will debate the challenges faced by their industries in fully leveraging the power of Web 2.0 technology and the often stark wall of doubt Web 2.0 mania runs into when it slams into the stolid reality of conservative, established industries. The panel will also discuss the possibilities enabled by Web 2.0 technologies and how it can solve specific challenges faced within these industries. Panelists will illustrate successes in becoming more directly connected to their customers and an increasing emphasis on providing them with intelligent information when they need it. How Web 2.0 strategies are enabling customers to become better informed, leverage collective information for their own use and by being part of a community, become part of any industry’s solution, helping move it forward, open it up and thereby helping to build trust. The panel will touch upon changing business models in an economically challenged environment and how globalization is impacting their industries and solutions.

Chris Kibarian is the president and general manager of FindLaw, a division of Thomson Reuters and the leading provider of free online information for consumers and for Internet marketing services for attorneys.

As president and general manager since March 2007, his role is to keep all of FindLaw’s specialized expertise – from technology and sales to customer operations and product development – focused on innovation, strategy and delivering value to customers.

His strategy for success is simple: provide superior value to users and to law firm clients. He brings practical, hands-on business expertise needed to drive FindLaw’s continued growth in a dynamic market environment. He specializes in growth strategy, business development, acquisitions, divestitures, transaction origination and negotiation, valuation, post-merger integration, corporate development and strategic planning. He also has domain expertise in electronic publishing, software, services and media.

Kibarian joined Thomson in 2001 as director of the Thomson Legal & Regulatory Global Strategy group. In his next position at Thomson, senior vice president of Strategy and Development at Thomson Tax & Accounting in New York, Kibarian oversaw a staff of 12 acquisitions specialists, strategy consultants, merger integration group and international development expert. He was responsible for all acquisitions and merger integration; completing 16 deals worth over $150M, all performing at or above projections. He also led multiple acquisition and development initiatives that accelerated revenue growth rates from 5% to 10% since 2004.

Prior to joining Thomson, among many other positions, Kibarian worked as a manager at The Internet Capital Group, senior consultant at Accenture and investment analyst at Cowen & Company. He earned his Bachelor of Arts from Brown University and his MBA from the Amos Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College.

Prior to FirstRain, Penny was Chairman and CEO of Simplex Solutions where she led the company to an IPO and through the sale to Cadence Design Systems. She continued at Cadence as Chief Marketing Officer and General Manager of a major division. An executive at Synopsys, Penny started her career as an R&D engineer with Texas Instruments then Daisy Systems.

Penny serves on the boards of FirstRain, Rambus, the Anita Borg Institute, Planned Parenthood Mar Monte and CCPY (California Community Partners for Youth). Penny speaks on entrepreneurship, career management and technology challenges and has given talks at Berkeley, Stanford, BU and Santa Clara business schools as well as for numerous industry organizations and women’s career development organizations. She holds a B.A. with honors in mathematics from Cambridge University in England.

David Marks


David Marks is co-founder and CTO of Loomia and leads the company’s strategic and technical vision. David has led technical teams and developed strategic software solutions for over 12 years.

From 2000-2002, David was a founding member, architect, and product manager for Modulant Solutions, a pioneering semantics-based technology provider that was one of the first companies to use semantic approaches to address the issues of information interoperability.

Prior to Modulant, David was a principal engineer at Modem Media (acquired by Digitas/Publicis), an interactive agency. While there, he architected and implemented web-application solutions for a number of Fortune 1000 companies, including Visa, Miramax Films, and American Century Investments. Prior to Vivid Studios, he served as an application engineer for, a next-generation dating service, where he worked to automate the content publishing process. David attended the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

James Powell is Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of Thomson Reuters and member of the Thomson Reuters Executive Committee.

Mr. Powell oversees the company’s technology initiatives and strategy, including the application of newly emerging technologies to advance the development and delivery of intelligent information. He also provides leadership to the divisional and business unit technology professionals as Chairman of the Global Technology Executive Committee. This work involves promoting best practices across the company in areas such as search, datamining, databasing, digital platforms and data center design.

Previously he was Chief Technology Officer (CTO) for the Markets Division of Thomson Reuters. In his 14 years at Reuters, Mr. Powell held a number of senior leadership positions including CTO for Enterprise; CTO and global head of product development; head of technology strategy; and CTO for the Reuters Financial division. He has also held senior leadership positions at Solace Systems, Citadel Investment Group and TIBCO Finance Technology.

Mr. Powell has a BS in Mathematics and an MS in Industrial Robotics from Imperial College London.

Shenly Glenn is a Managing Director at UCSF’s Memory and Aging Center, a leading clinical research group that studies dementia and its precursors. Shenly incorporates emerging technologies in the advancement of scientific research and shares key neurological findings with the public.

She is also the founder of Neurovue, Inc. – an online, automated neurological assessment company. Shenly was a technology strategy consultant at Sapient, Corp. She graduated from Stanford University.
