Today’s web and mobile devices are full of examples of great user experiences. But what is the key to those experiences? Is it using Flash? AJAX? Silverlight? Who knows? The true key to the success of those projects is that they first were prototyped. By building prototypes of a project, designers and developers are “able to explore strange new ideas and to boldly go where no project has gone before”.

As Todd Zaki Wafel wrote, “Prototyping is a great way to communicate the intent of a design both clearly and effectively. Prototypes help you to flesh out design ideas, test assumptions, and gather real-time feedback from users.” I would add that equally important, prototyping can help you avoid costly mistakes in your project by discovering issues early enough to correct them.

This talk will introduce you to the concepts and roles of prototyping within your workflow. It will examine the various forms that prototyping can take (from paper prototypes to rich, interactive simulations), their advantages and costs, and explore some popular solutions used in creating them.
