For 2008, we continue the tradition of Launch Pad at Web 2.0 Expo, but with some important changes, based on a program we test-drove at Web 2.0 Summit in October 2007. While it’s great to be chosen to launch your new company at a major event, the reality of the market is that the majority of successful Web 2.0 companies do more than just launch products. They also have to pass the test of VC scrutiny—that’s how the market determines who wins and loses in the world of startups. VCs and the audience will provide real-time feedback to participating companies.

Mr. Jung focuses on investments in internet and media. He has been a venture investor for over 5 years, previously as part of the venture team JPMorgan Partners since 2003. Prior to JPMorgan Partners, he served as Vice President of Corporate Strategy and Development at the Exigen Group, an enterprise software and services company. Mike also served as Vice President of Strategic Corporate Development at Ask Jeeves, leading the company’s mergers and acquisitions and strategic partnership efforts. He also advised a variety of high technology companies as an investment banker with BancBoston Robertson Stephens and an attorney with Gunderson Dettmer.

He holds a J.D. and an M.B.A. from the University of Michigan and a B.A. in Political Economy of Industrial Societies from the University of California, Berkeley. Mike is also the founder of Alpha, a Silicon Valley based networking association comprised of leading influencers, executives and entrepreneurs in the internet and media sectors.

Maha Ibrahim

Dedicated to building stellar communications companies, Maha Ibrahim brings deep operational experience in the telecom industry to Canaan. Maha Ibrahim joined Canaan’s Menlo Park office in March 2000 and focuses on digital media, networking and wireless investments. Known in the industry for her sharp business acumen and focused approach to investing, Maha has worked with some of the nation’s smartest entrepreneurs to build innovative companies from the ground up. A thought leader with deep insight into which business models will disrupt the status quo and propel companies to market dominance, Maha is a frequent speaker at digital media and venture conferences.

At Canaan, Maha helped to negotiate and manage a partnership between Tacit Networks and Brocade, and established Canaan as the first investor in Mino Wireless, the market leader in enterprise-class, IP-based wireless calling plans that enable companies to cut costs on their mobile phone calls by up to 70%. Maha also led the firm’s investment in PicksPal, an interactive community of sports fans that play both online and via social networking platforms like Facebook.

Prior to joining Canaan, Maha held numerous executive-level roles at Qwest Communications including Vice President of Business Development and Vice President of eBusiness and Internet Operations. While at Qwest she was instrumental in forging the company’s relationships with Netscape and Microsoft as well as several other private Internet companies. Earlier in her career, Maha was a management consultant with both the Boston Consulting Group and Price Waterhouse.

Maha holds a B.A. in Economics and an M.A. in Organizational Behavior from Stanford University and a Ph.D. in Economics from MIT. She currently sits on the boards of Habeas, Mino Wireless, PicksPal, and SenSage. Previous board seats include Tacit Networks (acquired by Packeteer) and Mobilitec (acquired by Lucent).

David joined August Capital in 2000. He invests broadly in information technology companies, with a focus on enterprise application and infrastructure software and consumer facing software and services. Prior to joining August Capital, David was an intellectual property and corporate attorney at Venture Law Group, Cravath Swaine & Moore, and Perkins Coie LLP. In his legal practice, David represented high tech startups in all aspects of their formation, financing and operations, including Yahoo!, When.com (AOL), Sonique (Terra Lycos), Pure Payments (Excite@Home), BuyDirect (Beyond.com) and Ofoto (Kodak).

David has an eclectic technology background. At Stanford, he studied and taught the impact of technology on music, earning a degree in Computer Music. At Cambridge, England, he explored the power of technology in tracking and combating bias crime, receiving an M.Phil. in Criminology. At Harvard Law School, from which he received a J.D., magna cum laude, David focused upon the convergence of technology and the law, serving as an editor of the Harvard Journal of Law and Technology and publishing papers on digital audio and software piracy.

David has taught business and law internationally and is a lecturer at Stanford’s Graduate School of Business. He currently sits on the board of directors of DoneRight, Nomis Solutions, PayCycle, Six Apart, Splunk Technology and VideoEgg. He previously served on the board of Evite which was acquired by Ticketmaster and was a board observer with Tickle Inc. which was acquired by Monster and Actional which was acquired by Progress Software.

Daniel Arkind


Dan Arkind

Dan is the founder of JobScore and a subject matter expert in staffing technology startups, having filled pretty much every position except CEO from employee 1 to 100 in early stage technology ventures. Dan spent seven years with OTEC, the recruiting firm that spun off Hotjobs.com. Dan co-founded OTEC’s Silicon Valley search practice, training a team of recruiters and placing personnel at early stage enterprise software, internet services, media and content companies. Dan holds a bachelor’s degree from Wesleyan University.

Bryan is the Director of Product Marketing at Acquia. Prior to Acquia, Bryan managed product and outbound marketing at EMC for Documentum’s collaboration, document management and search technologies. Prior to EMC, Bryan worked in product marketing and product management in the collaboration technology space, after brewing beer professionally for seven years. Bryan lives in the Boston area and is an ardent Red Sox fan, he earned his MBA at Harvard.

Andy Stack


Andy is the co-founder and VP of Products at Oortle, and has been a serial entrepreneur and advisor in the software and Internet industries. Before Oortle, Andy was the VP of Development and a founding team member of Mozes, a VC-backed mobile marketing company. Previously, Andy co-founded Stata Labs, a software company later acquired by Yahoo!, which launched Bloomba, the first desktop search-based email program, and SAproxy Pro, the anti-spam software ranked #1 by Consumer Reports in 2003. In 1999 Andy co-founded DealMaven, a quantitative analysis software company, which was acquired by FactSet. Before he began starting companies, Andy was a technical consultant with Oracle. He received his MBA in Entrepreneurial Management from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, and graduated Magna Cum Laude from Princeton University, earning a BS in Electrical Engineering. When not immersed in his family or digital media, Andy is usually either playing ice hockey or drumming with various local bands.

David Li


David is the CEO and Co-Founder of TradeVibes. Prior to TradeVibes, David
was the Sr. Director of Product Management at PayPal. During his five plus
year tenure, he managed a number of teams, including the Global Risk and
Operations team and the Auctions Team, in charge of integrating PayPal into
the eBay platform. Prior to PayPal, David held various consulting,
marketing, and product roles at AOL, Netscape, eBay, and Kiva, as an
independent consultant and a Consultant for Mercer Management Consulting
(now Oliver Wyman). He also advised and invested in a number of Internet
startups including Edvert and Paybl.

David holds a MBA from the Graduate School of Business from Stanford and a
B.A. with honors in Economics from Stanford University, where he graduated
Phi Beta Kappa.
