This workshop will explain how to use a simple 5-step model for startup metrics to make better product & marketing decisions. We’ll show you how the model works, how to apply it to your business, and we’ll do live “Startup Makeover” reviews for 5-10 companies.
This model focuses on measuring user activity at five basic levels of conversion:
Examples & variations on the model will be explored for several types of startups, and we’ll cover the following topics: create a basic conversion dashboard, define your site’s keyword vocabulary, select & evaluate marketing channels, test & optimize landing pages, setup simple email strategies for user retention, choose which users to target for viral marketing, and design a business model that won’t require three rounds of venture capital funding.

Dave McClure has been geeking out in Silicon Valley for almost twenty years as a software developer, entrepreneur, startup advisor, angel investor, blogger, & internet marketing nerd. He is an advisor or investor for Mint, Mashery, Simply Hired, TeachStreet, Oortle, KissMetrics, SlideShare, Eventvue, RichRelevance, HealthUnity, & Canopy Financial.
Dave is the conference chair for Graphing Social Patterns, and a co-chair for Web 2.0 Expo, and has been a guest lecturer at Stanford University for the nation’s first-ever course on building Facebook Apps. Dave is a board member for microfinance accelerator Unitus, advisor to microfinance lender Kiva.org, and a co-founder of the Silicon Valley Microfinance Network.
Previously, Dave launched and ran marketing for job search engine Simply Hired, and was Director of Marketing at PayPal, where he started and ran the PayPal Developer Network program. Prior to PayPal Dave was a database consultant and programmer for several companies including Microsoft and Intel. In 1994 he founded Aslan Computing, an internet and e-commerce firm later acquired by Servinet/Panurgy in 1998. Hiten Shah graduated from UC Berkeley in 2003. Since then he has been engulfed in the Internet marketing world. He first started off with offering SEO and SEM services by co-founding Advantage Consulting Services and helping to write ACS’s company blog, Pronet Advertising. Soon after he saw the need for better Internet marketing tools and started creating web applications including Crazy Egg, Siteblimp, and Serph. More recently along with his partners at ACS, he has been focusing on providing Social Media Marketing solutions for companies of all sizes.
Vanessa Fox, Entrepreneur-in-Residence at Ignition, is a noted technology blogger who has been cited in publications such as USA Today and the London Times. She’s been building websites since 1995 and has been involved with product strategy in a number of industries including telecom, retail, and wireless. A Google alumnus, she created Google’s Webmaster Central, designed to help site owners improve their web sites and gain more visitors from search. Vanessa writes for a variety of publications, particularly as Features Editor for SearchEngineLand.com, hosts a weekly show on webmasterradio.fm, and consults with clients on building online communities and on internet marketing.
