The web is changing as the proliferation of social, mobile and cloud channels have moved the world beyond the browser. As companies struggle to reach, market and manage their audience in this new space, enterprises are realizing they now need more than a website to engage partners and customers where they spend their time. To keep up, companies must be able to participate in the new world of applications driven by a new generation of web and mobile developers.

2010 is the year of the API as companies realize the business imperative of opening up their services to partners, the developer community and the open web. Open APIs are the new indirect channel allowing easy integration with your brand, product or service and enabling companies to locate new revenue streams, provide new value and gain presence in the Web 2.0 world.

For the enterprise, open APIs represent a shift in business models as companies suddenly find themselves becoming providers of APIs, cloud and mobile services. This poses both new challenges and new opportunities if companies want to be successful.

This talk will discuss creating an enterprise-ready business strategy around open APIs, using lessons learned from successful API leaders including TransUnion, Alcatel-Lucent, MTV Networks, Guardian Life and more. Issues addressed will include finding and enabling the developer community; monetization options through partnerships, advertising and access models; finding the value in legacy data and services; building buzz around your API; and achieving security and openness at the same time.

Illustrated by case studies of large-scale API pioneers, the talk will focus specifically on the unique issues enterprises face when opening APIs and will feature best practices, lessons learned, and essential benchmarks for success.
