    Engineers who become managers are experts at the technical aspects of their job, but they are often unprepared for the human and political challenges they face. This lack of training results in poor team performance, high turnover, and the engineering leader “retreating” back to the technical work they left behind. Marcus Blankenship teaches engineering leaders a framework for building strong relationships with their teams, creating a driven culture, and communicating upward and outward to benefit their teams.

    Leader–Member Exchange Theory proves what we all know: people join companies but leave managers. In fact, a recent Gallup poll reveals that 50% of us have left a job to “get away from a manager.” This crisis of poor management effects software development activities, even when Agile processes are used. Using hands-on individual and group activities, Marcus offers an introduction to Leader–Member Exchange Theory.
