As an industry, we have a long history of building abstraction layers upon which we build great things. But sometimes they get in the way. Kyle Anderson surveys some of the biggest abstraction layers we’ve built and analyzes how they might have gotten in our way and looks at some attempts to squash them. Then we’ll turn our eyes to Kubernetes, Mesos, containers, VMS, and functions and evaluate how those abstraction layers fit into the bigger picture and how they might be squashed in the future.
You’ll have a better understanding for how what you build fits into the bigger picture, reminding you not to build abstraction for abstraction’s sake.
Kyle Anderson is an engineer at Yelp and has been building systems to be proud of for more than ten years.
