Netflix streaming is comprised of dozens of microservices running in the cloud. In 2015, Netflix subscribers watched over 42 billion hours of streaming content. That number is expected to increase rapidly with its global launch in 2016. Netflix’s goal is to ensure that all subscribers enjoy the best possible streaming experience every time they interact with the service. This requires insight into the health of its systems at an aggregate level, as well as the ability to view the health of particular parts of the system. Another key requirement is visibility into specific aspects of its subscribers’ streaming experience based on various facets. Operational insight at this level provides Netflix an in-depth understanding of its systems, enables it to iterate rapidly over product improvements, and allows it to detect and resolve problems quickly.
Sangeeta Narayanan looks under the covers at the infrastructure and tools that help Netflix meet the diverse operational insight requirements for the Netflix Edge services. These tools cover the gamut of use cases—ad hoc and iterative query analysis against live data feeds, trend analysis against historical data, fine-grained insight into user experience, aggregate system health metrics, and much more. Join in to see how Netflix engineers are able to precisely obtain the specific insights they need from the massive amounts of data generated by its systems and get some ideas on how to empower your teams to do the same for your business.
