Mobile browsers today are like the Wild West: Different operating systems, browsers and hardware, each with its own quirks, and all fairly locked down. This makes it hard to write good performance measurement tools for these devices, and thus even harder to write fast web applications for them.

To help this cause, in this presentation we’ll review a bulk analysis of the top 500 websites on each of these platforms. The comparison will include:

  • High level numbers showing which is faster
  • Site profiles and verticals where the differences were especially big
  • Comparisons of different devices using the same OS
  • Comparisons of the same devices on WiFi vs. 3G
  • Analysis of Tablets vs. Phones
  • Deep analysis of a few sample sites, highlighting some performance-related differences

This analysis is made possible using dedicated performance measurement agents built by Blaze, offering insight not previously available. The same tools will be available as a free online service to help developers measure and analyze their own site’s performance.

Full disclosure: We accepted Guypo’s talk before he and I started working together on the HTTP Archive Mobile. Through that joint project I’ve gotten to know Guypo better (he’s a great guy! but talks a little funny) and found out more about (ask him to say “about”) the treasure trove of data he has collected. We’re just beginning to identify the best practices for mobile, and before finding solutions we need to understand the problems. Where are the long poles in this mobile tent? Guypo will show us the heat map of mobile performance hotspots.
