The early years of cloud computing have generated excitement around the automatic scaling of systems like social networks, games, and others kinds of “Web 2.0” applications. The excitement often centered around the belief that you could throw your capacity planning efforts out the door and let the cloud scale your systems for you in response to the demands users were placing on your infrastructure.

The reality, however, is much more complex. In particular, autoscaling raises a number of issues for the enterprise IT shop:

  • How do I plan my budgets around an auto-scaling infrastructure?
  • How do I make sure I am auto-scaling in response to events I care about?
  • How can I scale from my private cloud into the public cloud only when private cloud resources are exhausted?
  • How can I scale across multiple public clouds?

This session covers these and more autoscaling concerns for the enterprise IT shop.
