For many developers, the modern web site has evolved into something more like an application, requiring more specialized tools to measure performance. This workshop will provide an overview of some of these tools. You will learn how to profile the loading and running of a web page in various browsers, identify performance bottlenecks, and examine ways to optimize the overall user experience. Vendor supported tools such as Firebug, Web Inspector, and IE Developer Tools will be covered as well 3rd party software such as YSlow, PageSpeed, dynaTrace, and more.

Nice overview. Anyway these tools are standard for webdesigners and developers these days. Improving speed and caching behaviour with htaccess is also interesting and can give you huge performance improvements.

Would have liked more guidance on when to choose which tools, and the jitter introduced by each. ie, how much does each measurement tool perturb the real performance?

Decent overview of tools. If you only use firebug or only use IE8 developer tools, this session was a good comparison of other tools out there.

Going too fast, presumptions made that everyone knows how to use the tools. Disappointed, kinda useless session so far.

Tools. You gotta know the right tools to use. I had the idea for this workshop and was hunting around for the right person to give it. Then Nicholas Zakas’ book, High Performance JavaScript , came across my desk. And there in Chapter 10 is Matt Sweeney’s chapter on Tools. (Matt’s such a nice, humble guy he doesn’t even mention this in his bio – yes! he wrote this chapter!) Matt is a frontline web developer, dealing with all the browser quirks and performance challenges that you face. He knows the tools and how to use them. This is a must see workshop for anyone building real web sites.
