Networks aren’t built for the hell of it (unless you have a lot of free time and money). Traffic to a web site ultimately dictates the network requirements. However, as a network grows, there are opportunities to leverage it for end user performance gains.

This presentation starts at the familiar single-datacenter model upon which the vast majority of web sites are launched today. As the web site grows, the network transforms. A backbone evolves, peering with other networks takes place, anycast services are overlaid, and caches can be surgically located to suit a particular need. All of these aspects of the plumbing have an impact on the site’s performance.

Key message: As your site scales, don’t overlook the performance opportunities that the plumbing creates.
