The book market is undergoing a phase of transition. New formats are being introduced, there are new devices emerging from manufacturers and publishers are creating new business models. Crucially and most importantly – readers are making the leap from paper books to eBooks. There are plenty of signs that e-books and e-readers are becoming more popular, especially in libraries and the education sector. Despite the advances e-books are making in the sector, there are still hindrances to wide scale adoption, such as DRM, pricing, and reader-dependent formats. Will overcoming these be the answer or will publishers have to drive adoption through adding value to its content in ways that make it more interesting to the consumer? This talk will explore the challenges facing publishers serving the library and education sector to increase and improve adoption of ebooks.

Gary Rodrigues is a veteran in the publishing industry. He graduated as a Materials Scientist and Metallurgist from Aston University in the UK and entered publishing as an Editor for Thomson Scientific in the late 80’s. Over the next decade and a half Gary was instrumental developing business models as customers migrated from print to electronic subscription access to Thomson’s patent information services. His claim to fame is one of the first online demonstrations of database access via a dial up to the Indian Pharmaceutical industry in Delhi in 1989. On leaving Thomson, Gary spent some time at Wolters Kluwer’s london office where he worked with publishers wanting to make their key books available as eBooks on Books@Ovid. A 4 year stint at The Stationery Office, formerly Her Majesty’s printer in the UK as Publishing Services Director gave him a complete grounding in print book publishing and the challenges facing publishers in migrating to digital.

As Global Executive Vice President of Sales at Impelsys, a post he has held since April 2011, Gary now gets to work with publishers from all sectors and geographies as they face up to the challenges and opportunities of taking their content online profitably.
