The publishing environment is changing rapidly. New digital platforms are being invented, and for publishers it can be confusing and difficult to choose which direction to take their products. In this session, I will discuss how we at National Geographic Learning have taken our first steps to publish to tablet devices by experimenting with new print-to-digital publishing models.

In this case study, I will discuss:

  • why we decided to try new workflows and how the new publishing environment has allowed us to build our digital products differently.
  • what platforms we chose for our products and why we didn’t choose others.
  • the new workflows we developed, and how we changed the job roles of our content development teams as well as our vendors.
  • the challenges, successes, and lessons learned from this experience.
  • and the broader changes we are having to make in the way we develop content, as well as the future of our content development team vs technology team responsibilities.
