When looking for potential cost savings, most publishers have moved [or are moving] to offshore models for the production of both print and digital products. These initiatives are not always successful and can lead to frustration for both publishers and vendors. There are many dos and don’ts when it comes to sending production work offshore, but the secret to successful offshoring is a focus on partnerships. In this workshop by an educational publisher and one of our production partners we’ll discuss how together we’ve been able to make offshoring initiatives successful and review what it takes to successfully offshore work through relationship building, moving away from the traditional transactional focus. We’ll review our critical success factors and include tips and real-world advice for other publishers [and vendors].

Rebecca Goldthwaite is the Vice President of Strategic Partner Management at Cengage Learning, where she is passionate about her partnerships. In addition to her work with strategic supply partners, Rebecca is also heavily involved in project and program management activities for Cengage, including managing a recent company-wide initiative that focused on improving capacity and removing barriers to the scalability of digital product development and production.

Jack Mitchell is the Senior Vice President for the Higher Education division of PreMediaGlobal. He is responsible for overall operations and division profitability, and is also heavily involved in key publisher partnerships. Jack comes from a corporate design and print production background. Over the last 20 years he has overseen all aspects of full-service development and production including operations, sales, and finance. He has played a key operational role in several mergers and acquisitions at PMG, and has also led the transition to a complete and successful full-service offshore model.
