Understanding the Ebook Consumer: The Results of the BISG Consumer Survey

Although much of the publishing industry is working hard to develop and implement digital strategies, there’s little available research that evaluates book consumers’ actual interest in and preferences for digital content, or the factors that influence their reading habits and purchasing decisions.

To fill this void, the Book Industry Study Group (BISG) recently launched Consumer Attitudes toward Ebook Reading, a multitrack U.S. Census-based survey of hundreds of actual ebook readers. Three times over the course of nine months (Nov 2009 thru July 2010), ebook readers participating in the survey were, or will be, asked questions such as:

  • When did you first begin acquiring ebooks?
  • Where do you typically acquire ebooks?
  • Which genre(s) are you more likely to read as an ebook rather than a print book?
  • What device do you now use most frequently to read ebooks?

During this session, attendees can expect never-before-seen survey data from the second fielding (conducted during the first part of Feb 2009). In addition, those most closely involved with the project will share practical guidance on how one might use the data to help refine current digital strategies.

Wasn’t able to stay for the whole presentation – wish some of the slides hadn’t been removed!

I see the presentation is now online and I thank you for that. However, I wish an announcement was made before the live presentation to alert the group that some information would be removed from the PPT presentation online. I would appreciate if all the information presented in the session would be made available to the attendees.

Thank you.

Great presentation. I would love if the PowerPoint was posted online. It was too much information to absorb on the spot. Thanks.

Wish that this presentation had had more time. Would have liked to go over the statistics more slowly as there was so much great information.
