While traditional publishers get their digital programs in gear, looking at ways to publish digital first…or even digital exclusively, the digital publishing business model has matured into a viable, sustained publishing alternative. Since the mid-1990s, digital publishers have been engaged in producing and selling ebooks to a growing audience. Learn how publishers born in the digital era have created a successful business model, loyal readers, and even inspiration for traditional publishers.

We will focus on this digital-first/print-maybe model:

  • What it means to be a digital publisher
  • Myths, best practices, and cautions, including the challenges of expanding into print
  • Finding and retaining readers
  • Walking the walk when it comes to creating partnerships with authors
  • The all-important money questions — advances, royalties, staff, sales, and overhead.

The session features Angela James of digital publisher Quartet Press, an industry veteran who also worked at digital publishers Samhain Publishing and Ellora’s Cave, and Kassia Krozser of Quartet Press and Booksquare.com.

Kassia Krozser is the founder and primary voice for Booksquare.com, a website focused on dissecting the publishing industry with love and skepticism, and recently entered the mad world of publishing as part of Quartet Press, a digital publisher. She is also a founding partner at Medialoper.com—same love and skepticism applied to all entertainment media. Her work on both sites frequently focuses on how new technology impacts traditional media.

Executive editor of Carina Press, Harlequin’s digital-only press, and veteran of the digital publishing industry, Angela James is a well-known advocate for digital publishing. James has enjoyed a long and varied publishing career that has included ownership of an independent editorial services business, work as a copy editor for electronic book and small press publisher, Ellora’s Cave, and executive editor for Samhain Publishing. James frequently travels to regional, national and international writing conferences to meet with authors and readers, and present workshops on digital publishing for both authors and readers of all genres of fiction.
