The Sands of Time: How Cloud is Changing the Role of the CIO

Rod Smith (IBM Emerging Internet Technologies )
Sponsored Rhinelander South

The need to understand and anticipate buying behavior. The desire to provide a differentiating customer experience. These requirements are fueling demand for a new generation of applications based on mobile, social, and big data analytics delivered at a pace dictated by business opportunities. These requirements combined with the emergence of tech savvy business leaders have been propelling businesses to embrace the cloud as they’re able to rapidly develop and deploy new applications. At the same time, the cloud is challenging CIOs as they consider the clouds potential disruption to established practices such as enterprise architecture, integration with existing systems of record, adhering to security and privacy practices, and regulatory compliance. However, trying to prohibit the use of cloud will only lead to ‘islands of automation’ that were last experienced during the client server era. For CIOs, the combination of cloud technologies and agile processes provide an opportunity to work across the enterprise, supporting the business to deliver new applications at the speed of business.
