With over 45 million customers in the U.S. alone, MetLife is in charge of running six servers across two data centers, managing nearly 24 terabytes of data. Which this much information to handle every day, technology and big data applications play a crucial part in our business operations. As technology becomes more and more prevalent in everyone’s daily lives, we at MetLife are aggressively adapting the way we do business to serve all of our customers more efficiently and effectively.

This focus on customer centricity requires many things, but perhaps two of the most critical elements are speed and adaptation. MetLife’s technology team aims to incorporate these elements into the heart of everything we do, leveraging a ‘startup mentality’ to innovate our range of new offerings, services and tools.

This is evident in our work with The Wall, a new MongoDB-based customer service application that brings together data from more than 70 systems and merges it into a single record. By combining all of our customer information into one easy interface, we will not only ease the burden on our employees but also provide customers with quicker and sharper service. Of course, we also recognize that new technology requires the best talent to develop it, which led us to the recent launch of MetLife Synapse, a cloud-based recruitment tool that will enhance and accelerate our efforts to bring in top tech talent. In addition to these case studies, I will also discuss our ambitions in consumer-facing cloud-based technology that we see as an industry first.

I look forward to exploring these topics and much more, with the ultimate goal of transforming the way you think about what a company like MetLife is capable of, and taking with you actionable insights that any large organization can put to work to kick-start its innovation.
