Almost every piece of data is tethered to something in the real world. When we work with numbers, we are often able (and willing) to ignore the real world objects and systems that these numbers represent.

In this presentation, Jer Thorp will discuss his work with names—designing an arrangement algorithm for the 9/11 Memorial in Manhattan. He’ll walk through collaborative processes, admit to a series of failures and ultimately show how humans and software can combine to solve extraordinary problems.

The New York Times

New York-based artist and educator Jer Thorp is the data artist in residence at the New York Times. Jer is a former geneticist, and his digital art practice explores the many-folded boundaries between science and art. His work—a unique collection of organic Flash experiments and generative artworks—has won numerous awards and has been featured in many art and design publications, including the New York Times, the Guardian, Businessweek, and the CBC. It has also been exhibited in Europe, Asia, North America, South America, and Australia, as well as all over the web. Jer has taught in Langara College’s Electronic Media Design program, at the Vancouver Film school, and at the Emily Carr University of Art and Design while he served as an artist in residence. He has given a number of talks, most recently at Carnegie Mellon’s School of Art, Eyebeam, and IBM’s Center for Social Software. Jer is a contributing editor for Wired UK.
