Combining the Power of Hadoop MapReduce with Object-based Dispersed Storage

Location: Bleinheim Room (Sponsored)

As data holdings continue to grow, largely fueled by the ubiquity of mobile devices and a growing mobile, global workforce, enterprises are having to invest more resources both in CAPEX and OPEX to manage additional servers and storage. Many of which are deployed in a non-symmetric fashion. As a result, management of these resources becomes more and more complex and unmanageable, particularly at Exabyte scale. CIOs should consider a strategy to support analytical computations that decrease their infrastructure footprint, reduce cost, increase data center utilization and eliminate network bottlenecks.

This session will delve into the MapReduce computation paradigm, introduced by Google and widely adopted via the open-source Hadoop platform, combined with commodity hardware to execute computation at the storage node where data exists. We will discuss the limitations of large-scale Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) architecture deployments in storage and offer new approaches to consider that combine computation and storage to eliminate I/O bottlenecks, increase scalability, and greatly improve reliability of data.

Russ Kennedy brings more than 20 years experience in the storage industry to Cleversafe as the company’s Vice President of Product Strategy, Marketing and Customer Solutions. Having rolled up his sleeves working on automated tape libraries, Russ is still attracted to the technological challenges that have shaped the industry and particularly to the innovative approach that Cleversafe delivers to storage.
Russ joined the company initially in 2007 and left in 2009, staying on in an advisory role. In 2011, Russ rejoined the company seeing a clear opportunity to solve the storage needs surrounding the exponential growth of big data and the unique impact that Cleversafe delivers over traditional systems.
Previously, Russ served as the Vice President of Competitive Intelligence at CA Technologies, and was the Senior Director of Engineering and Product Management at Thin Identity Corporation.
Russ has an MBA from the University of Colorado at Denver and a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from Colorado State University.
