Riak Core: Scalable, Highly-Available Distributed Systems Infrastructure

A number of open source databases have taken inspiration from Amazon’s
Dynamo system. Some prominent examples include Riak, Voldemort, and
Cassandra. However, there is one essential difference that sets Riak
apart from the rest: Riak Core. In the model realized by Riak Core,
the fundamental distributed systems elements have been separated from
the database-domain-specific elements in order to create a framework
for building other systems with similar properties.

Justin will discuss:

  • Riak KV, the database that Riak Core sprang from
  • Riak Core, the engine for distributed systems
  • Riak Search, the first concrete use of Riak Core after its separation from Riak KV

Attendees will leave the talk with a good understanding of the
distributed systems fundamentals that Riak Core embodies, and how Riak
Core enables the development of new systems with those properties.
This is a major shift from the historical situation where every such
system had to start from scratch, which meant that only very few
enterprises found it worthwhile to build their own robust distributed
systems. With a general implementation of core capabilities, far less
foundational work is necessary — making it practical to produce a
customized, scalable, highly-available distributed system without
enormous investment.

Basho Technologies

Justin Sheehy is the CTO of Basho Technologies, the company behind the creation of Webmachine and Riak. As Chief Technology Officer, Justin Sheehy directs Basho’s technical strategy, including integration with other platforms and new research into storage and distributed systems. Most recently before Basho, he was a principal scientist at the MITRE Corporation and a senior architect for systems infrastructure at Akamai. At both of those companies he focused on multiple aspects of robust distributed systems, including scheduling algorithms, language-based formal models, and resilience.

Excellent talk, good job Justin! Although I managed to catch only the last 30 minutes or so, I learned a lot about Riak.
