Deep learning has changed the way we analyze data at a large scale, but for many people, questions remain. How does it actually work and what does it do? What is the connection between artificial intelligence and deep learning? Is this really the technology that will allow us to construct thinking machines?
Mikio Braun reviews recent advances in deep learning, highlighting the kinds of problems deep learning can solve and the architectures used in different contexts. These architectures are often inspired by biological examples. Understanding the way these systems are constructed informs the kind of information processing that is possible using a specific approach. Mikio also covers the mechanics underlying the learning process of these systems and offers an overview of the technological advances like GPU computing, which have made the recent progress in this area possible.
Mikio Braun is delivery lead for recommendation and search at Zalando, one of the biggest European fashion platforms. Mikio holds a PhD in machine learning and worked in research for a number of years before becoming interested in putting research results to good use in the industry.
