The move to a modern data platform in the cloud: Pitfalls to avoid and best practices to follow

4:20pm–5:00pm Thursday, 09/13/2018
Data engineering and architecture
Location: 1A 10 Level: Intermediate

Who is this presentation for?

  • Data architects, data engineers, data stewards, and their managers

Prerequisite knowledge

  • Familiarity with general data architectures, distributed file storage systems for structured and unstructured data (e.g., Hadoop, AWS S3, or other RDBMSs), and various query and modeling frameworks (Presto, AWS Athena, Apache Spark, etc.)
  • A basic understanding of analytics requirements (useful but not required)

What you'll learn

  • Explore lessons learned from existing implementations in data architecture, management, and governance
  • Understand how to design cloud data platforms with governance and security by design

Description

Competitive pressures are driving companies to increasingly become data-centric, with the cloud as the most viable deployment option, due to its abundance and the need for business and operational agility. Data analysts and scientists want modern, advanced analytics with direct access to their companies’ vast data assets. However, companies that undertake the journey of putting their data stores in the cloud often lack the requisite access control, governance, and security measures you would normally expect in a modern enterprise. This quickly opens the door to risk and confusion, not to mention incongruence with regulatory compliance.

Amandeep Khurana shares critical data management practices for easy and unified data access that meets security and regulatory compliance, helping you avoid the pitfalls that could lead to complex expensive architectures.

Okera

Amandeep Khurana is cofounder and CEO at Okera, which he launched in 2016 with CTO and cofounder Nong Li. After witnessing firsthand the challenges companies faced in big data and cloud migration, he built Okera to empower all users with easy access through a unified, secured, and governed platform across heterogenous data stores. Amandeep is passionate about distributed systems, big data, and everything cloud. Previously, he supported customer cloud initiatives at Cloudera and played an integral role at AWS on the Elastic MapReduce team, where he oversaw some of the industry’s largest big data implementations. As such, he understands that customers need self-serve analytics without trading in governance or security. Amandeep is the coauthor of HBase in Action, a book on building applications with HBase. Amandeep holds an MS in computer science from the University of California, Santa Cruz and a bachelor’s degree in engineering from Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology.
