Munich Re, the world’s largest reinsurer, has adopted a filesystem as a key element of the chief data office. Together with its technology partners, the reinsurer has installed an innovative platform capable of analyzing extraordinarily large quantities of data and focused on analytic innovation for a diverse group of analysts and actuaries distributed globally. The platform was launched by Munich Re’s first chief data officer in February 2016.
Analyzing semistructured and unstructured data, from paper documents to emails and video files , is crucial. Munich Re also wants to integrate external data, such as weather information and sensor data from vehicles, machinery, and other networked devices, to provide new insights that promote innovative products, services, and processes. At the heart of this implementation is a customized version of the Alation Data Catalog, which makes it easy for analysts and actuaries to find, understand, and trust the data in the data lake.
Munich Re’s big data initiative is a central component of its strategy to actively address evolving worldwide risk. Munich Re intends to increase its clients’ resilience against economic, political, and cyberrisks while setting and shaping trends in the insurance market. Andreas Kohlmaier explains how cataloging new data enables departments to effectively explore new ideas, develop new business fields, and further enhance customer service.
Andreas Kohlmaier is head of data engineering at Munich Re, where he leads the team responsible for setting up a group-wide data lake and supporting the transformation of Munich Re to a data-driven organization. Andreas has more than 15 years of experience in IT and data projects, with a focus on microservices, data management, IT architecture, and Agile project management.
