Standard Chartered Bank (SCB), a multinational banking and financial services company operating a network of 1,200 branches across 70 countries, uses big data to monitor money laundering activities and reduce compliance reporting time. To manage billions of transactions made all around the world, from internal systems across the bank’s network, ATMs, tellers, and credit transactions to those originating from external sources such as money transfers or person-of-interest lists, SCB invested in a data lake strategy. However, even with a dedicated staff of 70+ analysts, the bank consistently had a backlog of transactions pending preliminary review in order to detect activities that required further investigation and reporting.
The scale and complexity of data—and the prolonged back and forth between business and IT to create data transformation routines—prompted the bank to invest in automation, machine learning, and self-service data prep technologies. Santhosh Mahendiran explains how Standard Chartered Bank used Paxata, a Spark-based data preparation platform, to create a global view of its customer list, detect fraud, identify transactions made by politically exposed parties, and automate its regulatory compliance reporting.
This session is sponsored by Paxata.
