A new generation of businesses are betting that data-driven products can give them the edge. From efficient marketplaces to frictionless transactions, from better customer interaction to prescient predictions, from platforms that can mine vast troves of data instantly to catalogs of information available for sale, the startup ecosystem loves big data.

Startups that put data first aren’t just able to adjust faster and find their product and market better. They’re also reconsidering aging industries and ailing infrastructure, upending incumbents, and breaking down barriers to entry. Startup Showcase returns to Strata + Hadoop World in San Jose. It’s a chance for founders to hone their pitches, meet investors, and bounce big ideas off the industry’s movers and shakers.

  • If you’re chosen, you’ll receive up to two passes to Strata + Hadoop World for members of your company directly involved in the event.
  • You’ll have a space in the showcase to win over the judges and pitch your company to the thousands of developers, founders, executives, investors, and researchers that attend Strata + Hadoop World.
  • The winning startup will be chosen by our judges during the showcase and announced the following morning during the first day of keynotes.
  • The winner will also be featured on the O’Reilly Data page in a write-up by Strata + Hadoop World chair Alistair Croll.

Please note that in order to be a finalist, you need to be in San Jose on Tuesday, March 14. While there is no fee to apply, we cannot compensate finalists for travel or other expenses.

Startup Showcase success stories

Evan Prodromou,
“The Startup Showcase was a big step forward for It was an honor to be selected and fascinating to meet the other showcase presenters. We got to put our product in front of hundreds of attendees—potential customers, partners, and investors. It was great to find out what people really expected from a big data project. If you get in, bring extra business cards—you’re going to need them.”

Eric Frenkiel, MemSQL
“As an early-stage company in 2012, MemSQL attended the Startup Showcase, where we were awarded first place. It highlighted the company to both investors and customers alike. Since that first event, we have participated annually at Strata Hadoop World in San Jose and New York City, and it’s been possible to chart the growth of MemSQL at the show. This year, we had customers join us for an end-user panel, interacted with thousands of attendees at our booth, and developed valuable relationships with other leaders in the industry. The showcase is an amazing opportunity to propel a startup into the big data arena.”

Trina Chiasson, Infoactive (now Tableau)
“Pitching over 20 times in under two hours forced me to tighten up my pitch in real time. I quickly learned what parts of the Infoactive story resonated with my target market. I highly recommend applying to the Startup Showcase if you want to accelerate your learning while reaching a smart collection of industry influencers and prospects.”

Tim Burke, Affinio
“The Strata Hadoop Startup Showcase gave Affinio an amazing opportunity to pitch our technology to some of the best minds in data science. The format of back-to-back, fast-paced demos gave us unprecedented exposure to senior-level executives from brands, partners, and venture capital alike. Being selected as a showcase winner continues to provide us with international credibility that we’ve leveraged to secure business with major brands from around the world.”
