After talking to over a hundred organizations about artificial intelligence, deep learning, and machine learning over the last 18 months, Jana Eggers knows that we are not expanding how we are looking at our data. We have become stuck in a data rut, where we’re still grappling with the organization of and, yes, even size of our data rather than thinking beyond the current framework. Drawing on examples spanning various industries, Jana explains why it’s hard to advance to the next level when we are boxing ourselves in with what we currently know and offers the following lessons:

  1. Data leaves its fingerprints throughout our organization, and we should be using those fingerprints as well as the data itself.
  2. Like many other problems, you need to approach big (or even bigger-than-you-are-considering-now) data differently (i.e., this is not about scaling current methods).
  3. Sparse and disparate data is beneficial. Stop ignoring it!

Examples include:

  • A major media company that tracked but didn’t utilize information on when and how long a customer watched something because “we have so much other data we are still trying to make work”
  • A deals site that believed it couldn’t find rich data on the products or offers it was selling because “it isn’t worth the effort with things sell so quickly”
  • An energy corporation and pharma company that weren’t taking advantage of fluctuations to optimize business because “we don’t always have complete information”
  • A healthcare company and construction software company that spent many (wo)man hours every day searching for information because “we can’t reconcile and dedup the data we have”
