Some familiarity with Hadoop and nosql

Google developed Bigtable in 2004 to solve some of its critical big data problems, problems which many companies are facing today. The subsequent release of the technical details in the OSDI paper marked the beginning of the big data era, and sparked a wave of open source NoSQL databases including HBase, Cassandra, and an entire ecosystem of big data tools built around them. At Google, Bigtable continued to evolve, and has matured into a fully managed, almost infinitely scalable NoSQL database service.

This presentation will discuss some of our innovations on Bigtable in the past years, what we’ve been working on with HBase, and include some announcements on where we’re headed next! In addition, we’ll bring up Emre Baran, CTO and co-founder of Qubit, to talk about their extensive use of HBase, and some new technologies and products they’re building with us on Google Cloud Platform.

Cory O'Connor

Cory is a product manager on Google Cloud Platform’s storage team in Mountain View, focused on releasing Google’s techno-wizardry on an unsuspecting world. Before Google, Cory worked in cybersecurity, designing the machine learning systems supporting real-time fraud detection for the social web at Impermium (acquired by Google). Prior to rejoining the world of high-technology, Cory lived his life as a rocket/satellite scientist, building probabilistic and event-based simulations of complex aerospace systems.

He finds himself to be enthusiastic, in one way or another, about nearly everything.

Emre is Qubit’s co-founder and CTO. Qubit is a provider of an integrated web personalization, a/b testing, audience segmentation, and digital analytics platform. Prior to starting Qubit, he was a senior product manager at Google working on AdWords and AdSense products – building large scale artificial intelligence and analytics systems to scale and automate operations. Prior to Google, Emre was the co-founder and CTO of, Turkey’s largest social network.

When not thinking big data and personalization, Emre finds himself either kitesurfing or Olympic trap shooting.
