Two of the hottest talent commodities in product companies today are data scientists and designers. However, in most organizations these two groups lack an understanding of how each other work, what value they bring and more importantly the magic that can happen when they work together. There’s a natural tension. Instead of the Jets vs. the Sharks it’s the Spreadsheets vs. the Post-It notes.

At Intuit, we believe that data in combination with our design focus, which we call design for delight, will be the catalyst of the next wave of innovation for our company. With 50 million customers, Intuit has access to a unique pool of data that covers the financial spectrum – ranging from individual purchase history to business inventories.

In this talk I will share:

  • Organizational capabilities Intuit has built that bring these two groups together to focus on common goals.
  • Case studies of Intuit data science and design teams working together to create new products and reinvent our core franchises like TurboTax, QuickBooks and Mint.
  • How Intuit data teams have had a tremendous impact on tools that help designers do their best work. Examples include homegrown A/B testing platforms, data visualization and storytelling, and more.
  • Practical tips the audience can use to bridge these two groups for success in their own organizations.
