Description

Flipkart.com is one the largest online marketplaces with 160 million+ customers transacting on the entire range of product categories on the platform. The Big Billion Day in India, where the frenzy of shopping is unprecedented, parallels Black Friday in the US and Singles Day in China. This adds to the complexity and the stakes involved in ensuring the business continuity solution is holistic and relevant to the business constructs.

Utkarsh B. and Giridhar Yasa lead a deep dive into each of the problem characteristics, the challenges, the architecture patterns, and the paradigms Flipkart applied. They cover continuity of customer sessions across data centers in the event of a degradation or disaster; bounded consistency of transactional data required for functional correctness (e.g., inventory count, pricing, offers, and customer orders); data protection and data management techniques that simplify business continuity solutions, given that the entire footprint is large; systemized orchestration of disaster recovery to ensure a bounded recovery time objective (RTO); network and infra fabric that ensures resiliency; and graceful degradation techniques while serving live traffic.

These pose multiple challenges when there’s a large diversity in the nature of the applications covering live customer transactions, accounting, big data platforms, and asset-heavy systems like warehousing.
