Data architecture at AXA (sponsored by AXA)
The current digitalization of the society led by large technology companies impacts traditional companies that have to shift from a product-centered business model to a customer-centric one.
For AXA, a major insurance company proposing a large range of property and casualty, life and savings, health, and bank products and services across many geographies, it means leveraging customer data beyond organizational and IT silos to enable personalized interactions and services, while respecting regulatory requirements and market expectations, are deployed in AXA organizations for that purpose.
Céline Lescop explains AXA’s data architecture practice, which includes strong collaboration with data management teams and practices supported by international standards like DAMA DMBOK; a strong drive and a lot of autonomy in operations to find the best way to adapt—enterprise architecture discipline described in The Open Group standards is also leveraged to support the data transformation at scale; building reference stable architecture for data capabilities (BI and analytics, MDM, metadata, and interoperability) as common language and framework for internal use across architect communities and also published at The Open Group as the Information Architecture Guide; maturity assessment of data capabilities; papers that capture the consensus on a topic at some point in time; WW community of data architects enriched by external speakers on special events; starting to take into account environmental impact of data platforms relying on The Shift Project Lean-ICT publications; common reflection to face the following challenges—what data architecture in an hybrid on premise and cloud environment, how to integrate cloud native solutions on storage and dans processing and data science and classic IT solutions on MDM, reporting, semantic layers, and metadata management.
Coming from a diverse background in natural sciences, computer science, statistics, sociology and business administration, Roland Scharrer has been
working as a software engineer, data scientist, strategy consultant and project manager on complex national and international projects. In a decade, he gained a wide-ranging digital
transformation experience in leveraging data, analytics and emerging technologies in a way that influences how organizations approach business challenges to get a competitive advantage.

As part of his mandate, he is responsible for leveraging data and emerging technologies at scale with the potential to disrupt the current insurance business model and provide opportunities to shape future businesses.
• Roland started at AXA Group in January 2018 as CTIO/CDO in charge of data & technology innovation teams in Paris, Lausanne, Singapore and San Francisco.
• He joined AXA Germany in 2016 as Head of Data Strategy & Analytics.
• Prior to joining AXA, Roland has worked in Germany, Spain, UK, US and India in IT, in data science and strategy consulting, focusing on the Automotive and Financial Services industries. In his last position, Roland was Chief Data Scientist for Capgemini Consulting.
• Roland graduated in computer engineering, statistics, business administration and design thinking, among others from ESADE Business School Barcelona and Stanford/HPI School of Design Thinking.
