So, you’ve inherited a PostgreSQL server. Congratulations?

Thanks to Postgres’ popularity as the database for new applications, both open source and commercial, thousands of developers, system administrators and devops are finding themselves in charge of PostgreSQL servers with no idea what to do next. This tutorial will cover the essential care and feeding of a Postgres elephant so that you can get back to your real job.

The tutorial will include the following core topics:

  • Installation
  • Updates and upgrades
  • Backup
  • System information
  • Configuration
  • Basic query troubleshooting
  • Connection management
  • Monitoring
  • Replication basics
  • Where to go for further help

The Accidental DBA tutorial will involve hands-on exercises for the
attendees to learn the basic techniques involved in PostgreSQL
administration.  In order to do this, each attendee will need to run a
Vagrant virtual machine on her/his laptop while at the tutorial.  As
such, I ask all of the attendees to do the following:

# Plan to bring your full-power developer laptop to the tutorial.
# If you do not already use it, install and configure Vagrant on your
laptop now: "": There is a very good tutorial on
how to use Vagrant on the web site.
# Return to the tutorial page between July 14th and July 20th in order
to get checkout and download instructions for the tutorial materials: (the tutorial materials have been updated with new tools for 2014 as of Thursday, July 17.)

No time will be given during the tutorial for download and
configuration, nor any assistance with Vagrant
.  If you need assistance
with setting up the exercise VM between July 14th and 20th, email me at
josh at agliodbs dot com.

People may attend The Accidental DBA without participating in the
hands-on exercises, but you will not get as much out of the tutorial as
those who do participate.
