An Introduction to the Vert.x Framework

Vert.x is a new JVM based application framework with an event driven, asynchronous programming model. With APIs available in Java, JavaScript, Ruby, Python and Groovy, developers are given complete freedom to implement their application in the language of their choice.

Starting with the core Vert.x concepts, this presentation will walk attendees through the components of a simple vert.x based application. Through this process, attendees will gain an understanding of how Vert.x:

  • provides for a way to use several different languages in the same application
  • takes advantage of JVMs excellent multi-core capabilities
  • uses a module-based framework for packaging and hot-deployment
  • communicates with other processes via a distributed event bus
  • exposes an asynchronous programming model with very simple concurrency

Attendees should leave this presentation with the resources and a deep-enough understanding of Vert.x to be able to evaluate the platform for their own projects.

Apache Cassandra

Nate McCall has over 12 years of server side systems and software development experience. He is currently development lead for the Usergrid platform at Apigee and is also the lead developer and release manager of the open source Hector client for Apache Cassandra. Prior to Apigee, Nathan was with DataStax where he held several positions including team lead for DataStax Enterprise, and developer evangelist while occasionally conducting Apache Cassandra training sessions for DataStax customers. He has also presented at conferences such as Oracle’s JavaOne and O’Reilly’s Strata and OSCON. Nathan is also co-founder of the Cassandra-Austin meetup group in Austin, TX and is was recognized as a DataStax MVP for his involvement with the Cassandra community.
