R Predictive Analytics Workshop

Ray DiGiacomo, Jr. (Lion Data Systems, LLC)
Location: Portland 255 Level: Novice

R has become the “lingua franca” of statistics and predictive analytics due to its open-source nature. Now even the largest companies in the world are adopting R, not only because it is free but because many believe R is even more flexible and powerful than its billion-dollar proprietary rivals, SAS and SPSS.

This hands-on workshop will provide the attendee an introduction to R, an open-source statistical computing environment that some say is even more powerful and flexible than SAS and SPSS. Additionally, the session will also provide an introduction to predictive analytics theory and R’s ability to apply predictive analytics theory to real-world situations.

Attendees should bring a Windows or Mac laptop with the latest version of R installed. R can be downloaded at r-project.org.

Hi Michael, I put a “slides request form” URL up on the presenter screen during my seminar today. If you did not write it down you can email me via my website and I will send you the URL via email. – Ray

Ray are your slides available? I’d like to refer back to them when constructing my notes.

Hi Grant. You can run Linux but the R interface is more complex than the Windows and Mac versions (in regards to the community version of R). If you really want to run Linux, I would recommend installing the RStudio version of R which can be downloaded at rstudio.com for free. You can contact me via my website for more information. I am at liondatasystems.com.

Why Mac or Windows? I can make the machine dual boot, but Linux and R are already installed.

Hi Bill. The latest version is 3.0.x so we should try to use that one. Some recently updated R packages will break on 2.15.x so we should go with the latest release. Looking forward to meeting you. I received so many registrations for this course OSCON had to move my course into a larger classroom! Can’t wait. – Ray

Is the latest R version for this tutorial 3.0.x or 2.15.x?
