NORC at the University of Chicago is a contractor with the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) to evaluate the Strategic Health Advanced Research Projects (SHARP) Grant Program. This program was designed to advanced the field of health information technology in four areas: network architecture, security and privacy frameworks, clinical decision support and secondary use of electronic health record (EHR) data. Each of these grantees have committed to an open source paradigm to encourage development; foster an open environment for contributions from developers; and to crete synergies between each of the projcts. NORC is hosting this session to invite developers to share their thoughts on how open source can foster a dynamic, robust and sustainable environment for health IT, and how each of these projects could best utlize an open source framework successfully. The contribution made during this session will help NORC in its evaluation and will help inform ONC and the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) about the benefits of open source technologies.
