Open source, it’s not just for computers anymore. From plans to build your own cheap scanning tunneling microscope, to sites that crowdsource astronomical discoveries, to open source/open hardware rockets, science is opening up. Come talk about interesting projects and the unique challenges of open science.

We’ll talk about some of the successful projects – everything from open notebooks, to crowdsourced projects like Galazy Zoo, the sharing of information at sites like MIT open courseware, and open source projects like the rockets as Portland State Aerospace Society – and some of the problems that open science faces.

Open Science uses open source software and hardware and borrows heavily from the tools and ideas of the open source movement. It’s hackers, established scientists and motivated members of the public working on basic research and science outreach.
