Grails: Bringing Radical Productivity to the JVM tutorial

Tuesday, July 20
Portland 255

Learning Grails is a lot of fun, especially when you’re learning while doing. With that in mind, this is
going to be a hands on tutorial and you will learn more and have a better experience if you follow
along during the class. To do this you will need the Java SDK and Grails installed on your computer.
You will also need a text editor of some sort and a web browser.

Most modern Java development tools, such as Eclipse, IntelliJ IDEA, and NetBeans, have Groovy and
Grails support. Feel free to use one of these during the class. I will just be using a text editor.

Completed code samples will be available on CD or USB drive at the conference, but please be
sure that Grails and Java are both installed before coming to the class.

For more information on downloading and installing the Java SDK, please visit
Here are the instructions for downloading and installing Grails:

Download Grails version 1.3.3 from
Extract the archive to a local directory
Set a GRAILS_HOME environment variable to point to that directory
Add GRAILS_HOME/bin to your PATH
Set a JAVA_HOME variable to a local directory containing a valid Java SDK

To test your installation type
grails help at a command prompt. You should see a list of grails
commands. If you’re having trouble or have any questions, feel free to email me at

Thanks and I’ll see you at OSCON!
