K-9 Mail is an open source email client for Android. It began life as a single feature fork of Android 1.0’s core email client. Since fall of 2008, K-9 has seen several dozen contributors and a few thousand commits.

This talk will cover K-9’s evolution over the past several years. It will touch on just about every aspect of releasing a moderately popular open-source application for Android. You’ll learn a bit about:

  • the myriad distribution options for Android applications
  • what you expect from end-users
  • what it takes to “fork” part of Android
  • where to find answers when things go wrong
  • useful tools and resources to help test and debug your application

While the primary focus of this talk is a “braindump” of everything I wish I’d known when I started to build K-9, I’ll also touch upon K-9’s design and architecture and spend a few minutes on where K-9 is headed next.

Come see just how easy it is to “embrace and extend” Android.
