While many open-source projects leverage hosting solutions like Google Code Hosting or SourceForge, many projects have their own infrastructure of servers to provide additional services to their communities. In this session, folks from a variety of open source projects and hosting providers (including Apache, OSUOSL, and will give an overview of their infrastructure as well as the challenges they have faced in building their infrastructures.

This talk is meant to be highly interactive – feel free to stop by and
ask your questions about how Perl runs CPAN!

Justin R. Erenkrantz is currently President of The Apache Software Foundation. He is also CTO of Project WBS and received his PhD from the University of California, Irvine. He has been a long-time contributor to the Apache HTTP Server, Subversion, APR, Serf, mod_mbox, and flood.

Oregon State University Open Source Lab

Lance is the Lead Systems Administrator/Architect for the Oregon State University Open Source Lab (OSUOSL) and a Gentoo Linux Developer. He joined the Gentoo Linux project in 2003 and have been involved in managing their infrastructure and maintaining about a dozen or so packages in portage. Lance manages all of the hosting activities that the OSL provides for the open source community including projects such as, Drupal, Apache Software Foundation, and many many more. Lance has been at the OSL since 2007.

John “Warthog9” Hawley is a jack of all trades, programmer, sysadmin, crazy man and rabble rouser. Currently working for the Linux Foundation on assignment to as their Chief Systems Administrator. He’s worked on as a primary sysadmin for numerous years, created PXE Knife a network & cd bootable cd of useful utilities, maintains a set of GeoIP based patches for the Bind name server, and probably more random things than he is going to remember.

There was a lot of talk about what it is, but very little about how to. I think the 3-presenter idea prevented any of them from taking control of the presentation and getting a good discussion going.

The attendees seemed really interested in the topic, throwing out a lot of questions and the end, and sticking around afterward, but the presentation didn’t seem to meet expectations as specified in the presentation outline.
