Through a combination of lecture and hands-on exercises you will learn how to architect and implement PostgreSQL’s Warm Standby, Hot Standby, and Streaming replication capabilities. These features allow PostgreSQL administrators to quickly and easily scale their installations to multiple queryable servers without installing third party components or packages.

This session will cover the following topics:

  • Basic PostgreSQL internals (Shared Buffers, WAL, and architecture behind Hot Standby nodes and Streaming Replication)
  • Setting up PostgreSQL WAL archiving.
  • Initializing a Standby Server
  • Starting Warm and Hot Standby (and understanding the differences)
  • Querying a Hot Standby node (dos and don’ts)
  • Failover to a Warm/Hot Standby node
  • Understanding Streaming Replication
  • Implementing Streaming Replication
  • Verifying that everything is working (sanity checks)
  • Final wrap-up/questions & answers
